Peter Ungar uses both contemporary and historical research of the built environment, mindful of the increasing importance of sustainability, energy efficiency and how buildings respond to their surroundings.

The design and orientation of buildings in relation to climate has been present in architectural discourse since Roman times and was then perpetuated in Renaissance Italy. Whilst at Cambridge University, Peter carried out extensive research into the design of the Italian town of Pienza, one of the first examples of urban design, with particular emphasis on the environmental qualities of its unique cathedral and palazzo where the cathedral faces south and not the usual east.

In this way, research informs all aspects of practice, particularly historical sensitivity, conservation, sustainability and the environment.
